If you have oily skin, you are probably in a constant state of shine. And doesn’t it seem like the hotter it gets outside, the shinier your skin becomes?
Managing oily skin can be like fighting a never-ending battle; arming yourself with various oil-drying serums, clean-up cloths, etc., etc. But despite everything you end up losing every time. The oil always comes back.
Perhaps these tips can help you finally be the victor against that shiny skin!
Where does the oil keep coming from?
The technical term for the oil your skin produces is sebum, which comes from the sebaceous glands that lie under your dermal layers. Normally, these oils prevent harmful grime and dirt from getting on your skin while keeping it hydrated at the same time. They serve an important purpose when your hormones and genetics are balanced properly, but for some the scales are be tipped one way, causing oily skin.
How can I stop the madness?
It’s all about genetics. Unfortunately, you won’t wake up one day with perfect skin or perfectly balanced hormones simply because it isn’t in your genes. Because of this, there’s no real way to stop the production of oil without harming the protective layer on your face. This is why in the past you may have used harsh cleansers or toners that caused your skin to dry out and break out.
The good news – and a good reason to embrace your shine – is that the oil in your skin can deter wrinkles and lines. But in the meantime, here are some ways to help manage your oily skin.
Tips and Tricks
For optimum results, every person needs his/her own unique combination of skincare products, but these general rules of thumb should help anyone struggling with oily skin.
- Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse!
On average, a person with oil-prone skin should clean her face twice a day – at morning and night. Products made for “sensitive skin” are a good start for anyone looking for the perfect cleanser. These formulas are light enough to keep skin from drying out but thorough enough to clean away the day’s grime and dirt. If it seems too weak, try a more intense cleaner with ingredients like hydroxyl, salicylic, or glycolic acid. - Toner
Toner can help reduce the size of pores and soothe skin simultaneously. Avoid toners that will dry out your skin too much, so steer clear of anything with alcohol in it. - Moisturize
It’s a common misconception that you don’t need to moisturize oily skin, but oily skin does not equal hydrated skin. Moisturizer is the perfect way to give your skin much-needed nutrients. However, with an oily complexion, you should look for moisturizers that are oil-free and light on the skin. - Choose the right makeup
If you have oily skin, you know makeup can be a big problem. Because of how makeup can build up, it often makes skin look even shinier than usual. Look for cosmetics that are oil-free and begin your routine with a matte primer every day. Follow up with a loose powder to blot any remaining oil. - Use blotting papers
Instead of constantly powdering your nose, carry blotting papers made specifically to soak up the oil. They are readily available over the counter at your local drugstore.
Follow these tips and who knows? You may learn to love your oily skin!
