Skin treatments have come a long way in the past several years. Conditions that you assumed required extensive treatment, or you thought you just had to live with can now be treated in as little as one outpatient appointment.
Age spots, wrinkles, crow’s feet, frown lines, acne scars, and sun damage are just some of the many examples of skin problems you can treat in your dermatologist’s office. Here are some of our favorite innovations that have happened over the last few years:
Laser Treatments for a Variety of Skin Problems
Laser dermatology services have been around for a while, but recent technology is better than ever. One of the most advanced laser technologies is called the PicoSure® laser, which we use at Dermatology Associates.
It works by transmitting ultra-short pulses of intense light to your skin that last just one trillionth of a second. The only thing you feel is the light pressure from the device as it moves gently across your face. You do not feel the light energy pulses at all. Each one penetrates the top layer of your skin to break up pigmentation at the deeper layers. It may take up to several sessions for the blemish to disappear and for you to have the smooth skin that you desire.
This ultra-fast and powerful laser has also revolutionized the field of tattoo removal. In addition to requiring far fewer sessions, people experience less pain during the procedure and only temporary discomfort after it. Like other laser procedures, the infrared light sent in short pulses breaks up the tattoo ink so it can be absorbed and eliminated by the body. Unlike older technologies, new lasers used for tattoo removal leave little to no residual scarring and skin discoloration.
Forget the Facelift, Go for Skin Revitalization Instead
Do you hate your sagging skin but really don’t want to go through the pain and downtime of a facelift? Loose skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including normal aging, sun exposure, smoking, acne, and a genetic tendency. But you don’t have to just live with it. Skin revitalization is a simple outpatient procedure that uses a different type of laser technology to tighten sagging skin and smooth out your rough spots. This treatment produces brighter, younger-looking skin as well.
Advancements in Dermal Fillers and Injectables
Over the past few years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved several new treatments that help a wide variety of cosmetic problems. The most recently approved facial fillers and injectables treat dynamic wrinkles, which are those on the forehead, around the eyes, and furrows near the eyebrows. Newer dermal fillers replace lost collagen faster to give your face a fuller, more robust appearance. They also treat fine lines and areas that were previously difficult to treat, such as those around the lips. Many of these newer products last longer and require fewer treatment sessions to see impressive results.
Improving your appearance is not nearly as expensive, time-consuming, or painful as you might have thought. As exciting as that is, watch for even more innovative treatments in the next few years.
